The name sirloin originated in France as the surloigne or "above the loin." As a roast it is cut from the largest muscle of the sirloin, and is found at the top of the sirloin section which falls between the ribs (loin) and the rump or round. It is lean and very low in fat, and great for roasting or stewing.
